Student develops new techniques in equine research

Middleburg resident Kristine Urschel, a postdoctoral student at Virginia Tech and working at the Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension (MARE) Center, developed new techniques for measuring amino acid metabolism and carbon dioxide production in horses.

The research uses non-hazardous stable isotopes to trace protein metabolism in horses. This will allow an assessment of how much tracer amino acid is oxidized to carbon dioxide and subsequently exhaled. It will also show how much is being used for protein synthesis.
